The World Tapir Day site isn’t just an information resource – it also aims to develop a community around tapir awareness and conservation.

All species are now threatened because of habitat destruction, hunting and human activity in their ranges. The Mountain Tapir and Asian Tapir are the most at risk. The Sumatran population of the Asian Tapir may be no longer viable as there have been suggestions that only fifty animals remain in the wild.
